Olympians, no matter their sport, have one thing in common: they are committed.

True, Olympic athletes, all excellent athletes for that matter, have a talent that has been developed and honed to a high competitive level. But it’s not the natural talent that sends Olympians to the games and then to the podium. It is something more. It is a commitment to work hard for a goal. They are motivated to excel, to do what they need to do to achieve such a high level of success. They are willing to do the hard stuff, the boring, repetitive, even painful activities that will help them become stronger and smarter in their sport, those things that will give them a competitive edge.

A recent article in Education Week called “The 5 habits of extreme learners” considers the changing landscape of future careers. With the rapid advances in technology, students today may be doing jobs in the future that don’t even exist yet. It can be hard to help students prepare for that world when we aren’t even sure what it will look like. That’s why we need to encourage students to explore and provide new ways for them to discover and learn. The author Milton Chen said this of these students: “Like extreme athletes, they were passionate and fearless.”

Think of it as encouraging your child to be like an Olympic athlete. Give them opportunities to learn that are outside the typical realm of education. Help them find what motivates them. Encourage them to keep working even when a task becomes challenging.

At Bricks 4 Kidz® we are committed to giving kids the opportunity to become extreme learners – to follow their passions without fear.

#B4K #Lessons_in_gratitude

You know that at Bricks 4 Kidz we are all about building academic skills as kids learn by doing. The holidays offer the perfect time to teach kids some lessons that lie outside the realm of academics, but are still so important to success in life.

With the holiday season in full swing, there’s a lot of talk about being thankful. However, we don’t always slow down to make sure we are teaching our kids what that means. In the hustle and bustle of this season, there are some simple ways we can encourage our kids to have a grateful spirit:

1.Encourage kids to talk about things for which they are grateful. This shouldn’t be reserved for Thanksgiving dinner or even the month of November. Make it a family habit all year long.
Let family members share one thing they are thankful for on the drive to school, at the dinner table, or before bedtime each night.

2.Teach your kids the importance of saying “thank you.” Go beyond the verbal “thank you” and have your kids send thank you notes. The holiday season is the perfect time to do this.

3.As you share what makes you grateful, don’t miss the opportunity to talk to your child about the importance of giving to others. Stress that giving is not about money. It can be as simple as a kind or encouraging word. Giving to others can help us appreciate what we have even more.

4.Put it into action. You might let your child put some money into the Salvation Army’s bucket at the local mall or let your child choose a toy to donate to an organization that has a toy drive.

5.Finally, encourage your kids to keep a “gratitude journal.” Research shows that people who are grateful are more likely to be successful. A study by UCLA and the University of Miami provides scientific support for the idea of putting it on paper, finding that people who do so are happier and healthier.

Bricks4Kidz Stop Motion
New Course Announcement!
Lights, cameras, LEGO® action!

Bricks4Kidz offers a new Stop Motion course for your kids.
Use LEGO® Bricks to tell YOUR story, complete with music, special effects and all your favorite LEGO® mini-figure characters! In this unique and creative course, kids will plan, script, stage, shoot, and produce their own mini-movie using Stop Motion Animation, also known as stop action or frame by frame. It is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own.

Working as a team, students will use LEGO® components to build the set and props, then shoot their movie using a camera. Teams will use movie-making software to add special effects, titles, credits and more. When the movie is complete, kids will impress friends and family with their movie. Don't miss your chance to be a movie producer!

All participants will receive a CD with their own mini-movie they produced and a certificate.
